Daycare Cleaning Checklist: What Directors Should Look For

April 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Daycares are one of the hardest facilities to keep clean because tiny hands touch everything. A strong cleaning plan protects your license, your staff, and the families you serve.

Daily non-negotiables

Toys, tables, and high-touch surfaces should be sanitized every day. Floors need more than a quick sweep — they should be mopped with a child-safe, neutral cleaner that leaves no residue.

  • Disinfect doorknobs, light switches, and sink handles
  • Sanitize all tables, chairs, and play surfaces after use
  • Empty diaper pails and trash liners daily
  • Spot-mop spills and tracked-in dirt immediately

Weekly deep-clean targets

Once a week, the entire room should get a reset. That includes dusting above eye level, cleaning windows and mirrors, and moving furniture to reach hidden crumbs and dust.

  • Machine-scrub or strip-and-wax hard floors
  • Deep-clean restrooms and diapering areas
  • Wash or replace soft items like rugs and plush toys
  • Inspect and clean air vents and ceiling corners

Products and safety

Child-safe cleaning does not mean less effective. It means using EPA-registered disinfectants at the correct dwell time, storing chemicals in locked areas, and never leaving floors slippery.

Ask your cleaning provider for an SDS binder and a clear list of products used in classrooms versus restrooms.
